Basseterre

The capital and largest town of St. Kitts, Basseterre is a small, walkable port founded by the French in 1627 and rebuilt several times after fires and hurricanes. Most of what you see is late-Victorian colonial architecture in pastel timber and stone, set on a flat plain between Mount Olivees and the sea.

The town's two main public spaces are The Circus, a small roundabout modelled (a little loosely) on Piccadilly Circus and dominated by the green Berkeley Memorial clock, and Independence Square, a Georgian park where slave auctions were once held. Wander a few blocks of Fort Street, Bank Street, and the waterfront and you've seen most of it — but the National Museum, the cathedrals, and a handful of bars make for an easy half-day.
