South Friars Bay

A wide sweep of pale sand on the Caribbean side of the peninsula, with calm shallow water and a row of relaxed beach bars under almond trees. South Friars is where locals come for Sunday lunch — barbecue smoke, soca and reggae, picnics that last until sunset.

The water is excellent for swimming and snorkelling, especially around the rocks at either end. Shipwreck Bar & Grill and Carambola Beach Club anchor the strip with lounge chairs, grilled snapper, and rum punches. A five-minute walk over the low ridge gets you to North Friars Bay on the Atlantic side, which is rougher but often empty.
