The long, slim tail of land that drops south-east from Basseterre, all dry savannah and lava-rubble hills with the Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic on the other. Until 1989 it was virtually inaccessible; the Dr. Kennedy Simmonds Highway, paid for largely by USAID, opened it up and turned it into the resort coast of the island.
The road climbs to a viewpoint at Timothy Hill, where you can see both oceans at once — the calm Caribbean to the west, the rougher Atlantic to the east, with the silhouette of Nevis hovering on the horizon. The peninsula has the best beaches on St. Kitts: Frigate Bay, South Friars Bay, and the wide, deserted sand of Cockleshell Bay at the far end.
