Saint Lucia has a handful of events that are worth planning a visit around.
Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival (May)
Established in 1992, the Jazz Festival is held each May at Pigeon Island National Park and across various venues around the island. It draws international musicians and has grown into one of the Caribbean's most celebrated music events. Outdoor concerts at Pigeon Island are the centrepiece. The festival also includes arts exhibitions, fringe events, and free performances in Castries. Tickets for the main shows sell out, so book in advance if this is your reason for visiting.
Carnival (July)
Saint Lucia's Carnival is held in July, later than most Caribbean carnivals. It includes calypso competitions, a Carnival Queen show, J'ouvert (the pre-dawn street party), and the main parade. Castries is the hub. It's smaller and less overwhelming than Trinidad's Carnival but genuinely festive, with strong local participation.
Jounen Kwéyòl — Creole Day (last Sunday of October)
This is the island's most distinctively Saint Lucian celebration. Every year, several villages are designated as hosts and transform for the day: traditional Creole food, kwéyòl music (tambo and lapo kabwit), folk games, and local crafts fill the streets. The day celebrates the Kwéyòl language and culture that defines everyday life on the island. Saint Lucia has observed Creole Day since 1981 and the celebration has expanded into Creole Heritage Month throughout October.
Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (December)
Not a festival in the traditional sense, but the ARC — the world's largest transatlantic sailing rally — finishes at Rodney Bay Marina each December. Hundreds of yachts arrive over a period of weeks, and Rodney Bay fills with sailors from around the world. It's a lively, sociable time in the marina area.
