Visa and entry
Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and EU countries do not need a visa to visit Saint Lucia. Americans, Canadians, and Britons can stay up to six weeks without a visa; EU nationals can stay up to 90 days. You will need a valid passport and evidence of a return ticket or onward travel. If you need a visa, apply at least two weeks before travel.
Currency
The currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$), pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1. US dollars are widely accepted, particularly in tourist areas, but you'll get better value exchanging to EC$ for local markets and minibuses. ATMs are available in Castries, Rodney Bay, and most towns. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.
Electricity
Saint Lucia uses 240V, 50Hz electricity with UK-style three-pin plugs. Some hotels also have 110V outlets for US appliances. North American visitors will need an adapter and possibly a converter for sensitive electronics. Power cuts, though infrequent, do occur.
Language
English is the official language. Kwéyòl (Saint Lucian Creole French) is spoken by most of the population in daily life. Some knowledge of French can be useful in understanding place names and Kwéyòl.
Health
No vaccinations are required for entry. The tap water in Castries is treated and generally safe to drink; in rural areas, stick to bottled water. Dengue fever is present and mosquito precautions are sensible, especially in the wet season. Medical facilities in Castries are adequate for most problems; serious cases are often referred to Barbados or Trinidad. Bring travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
Safety
Saint Lucia is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft and opportunistic crime occur, particularly in Castries. Use common sense: don't leave valuables on the beach, and be alert in the Castries market area after dark. Most tourist areas are calm.
Communication
Mobile coverage (Digicel and Flow) is good across most of the island. Wi-Fi is available at hotels, most restaurants, and cafés. The international dialling code for Saint Lucia is +1-758.
Taxes and tipping
A 10% VAT and a 10% service charge are typically added to hotel and restaurant bills. Check your bill before tipping on top of this. Taxi drivers and local guides appreciate a tip.
