Bequia's most distinctive souvenir is the hand-carved scale model sailing boat, made by a handful of master craftsmen in small workshops in Port Elizabeth. The best-known names are Sargeant Brothers and Mauvin's, both with showrooms a short walk from the ferry dock.
The boats are detailed reproductions of working Bequia schooners and yachts that visit Admiralty Bay, built from wallaba and other local woods, with stitched canvas sails and brass fittings. Prices run from US$200 for a small model to several thousand for a metre-long replica of a famous yacht. Watching the carvers at work is half the appeal; the workshops are happy for visitors to look in.
