Bequia is the largest of the Grenadine islands belonging to St. Vincent, a small, hilly island of about 7 square miles set between the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic to the east. With a population of around 5,000, it has retained a quiet, unhurried pace that the bigger resort islands have long since lost.
Port Elizabeth, the main settlement, curves around Admiralty Bay — one of the finest natural anchorages in the eastern Caribbean. Sailors have known it for centuries and the bay still fills with yachts in season. The island has a strong tradition of boat building, and Bequians are known for their craftsmanship; model boats are the main local souvenir. The beaches on the leeward (west) side, particularly Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay, are calm and beautiful. Snorkelling and diving are excellent in the surrounding waters.
Bequia is reached by ferry from Kingstown on St. Vincent — the crossing takes about an hour.
