Basil's Bar is the social centre of Mustique, full stop. Built on a wooden jetty over Britannia Bay, it has been here since 1977 and has accumulated decades of famous faces without becoming self-congratulatory about it. Come for breakfast, stay for lunch, return for sunset cocktails. On Wednesday nights during the high season, impromptu musical sessions sometimes involve whoever happens to be on the island that week — which occasionally means a Rolling Stone. The jump-up on Wednesday evenings is the closest Mustique comes to a party.
Beyond Basil's, dining and drinking on Mustique happens mainly through the Cotton House restaurant, villa cooks, and occasional private events. There is no bar-hopping to be done. That is either the appeal or the problem, depending on what you came for.
