Mustique

Private Grenadine island of villas and beaches, managed collectively by its property owners.

Mustique is the most famous private island in the Caribbean — and it earns the reputation. Covering just five square kilometres in the southern Grenadines, the island has been privately managed since the 1960s, when Scottish aristocrat Colin Tennant bought it and set about building a playground for the elite. The result is a place that is strikingly beautiful, conspicuously unhurried, and genuinely unlike anywhere else in the region.

The island is owned by the Mustique Company, a collective of the roughly 120 villa owners who hold property here. There are no hotels — only private villa rentals and the Cotton House, a small boutique property. Cars are minimal, golf buggies are the preferred transport, and the airport runway is too short for private jets, which keeps the crowds manageable even among the wealthy. Mick Jagger, Tommy Hilfiger, Shania Twain and members of several royal families have held properties here; Princess Margaret was gifted a plot of land in 1960 and built her villa, Les Jolies Eaux, where she returned regularly for decades.

None of this exclusivity means Mustique is off-limits to ordinary travelers. You can rent a villa, book the Cotton House, or arrive by boat. Day visitors are technically allowed but actively discouraged — the Mustique Company prefers guests who stay long enough to understand the pace of the place. That pace is slow by design: no casinos, no chain restaurants, no nightclubs. Basil's Bar, perched on a jetty in Britannia Bay, is as close to nightlife as the island gets, and on some evenings it's exactly enough.

The landscape is lush by Grenadines standards — volcanic hills rolling down to white sand bays, sea-grape trees marking the beach edges, clear water shifting from turquoise to deep blue. Macaroni Beach is the showpiece, a wide arc of pale sand on the Atlantic side with good surf. Gelliceaux Bay is calmer and better for swimming. Endeavour Bay fronts the main village.
