Les Jolies Eaux

Les Jolies Eaux — "The Beautiful Waters" — sits on a headland at the southern tip of Mustique with views that justify both the name and the journey. The villa was built for Princess Margaret following Colin Tennant's gift of a plot of land as a wedding present in 1960. What went up on that headland was a five-bedroom house in a vaguely Moorish style, surrounded by terraces cut into the hillside above the water.

Margaret used the villa as her private escape from royal life, arriving each January with a rotating cast of artists, actors and aristocrats. The parties were long and sometimes raucous. Today the villa is available as a rental through the Mustique Company, like most properties on the island. Standing on its terrace, with Grenadines islands scattered across the water to the south and the Caribbean blue in every direction, you understand exactly why a princess would want to keep coming back.

A story
Princess Margaret was given the land by Colin Tennant as a wedding gift in 1960, and commissioned architect Arne Hasselqvist to build her Caribbean retreat. She spent several weeks here every January for decades until her health failed — hosting parties that became legend even by Mustique standards.
