Lucayan Caves

East Caicos contains a network of limestone caves that sheltered Lucayan Taíno people before the arrival of Europeans. Artefacts found in the caves — pottery, carved objects, and human remains — indicate use over several centuries. The Lucayans were one of the first peoples encountered by Columbus in 1492, and within decades they had been entirely wiped out by disease and enslavement.

The caves are accessible but unlit and unmarked. Bring strong torches and go with someone who has been before. The cave formations themselves are impressive regardless of the historical dimension.
