Brownville-Summerville Historic District

Late-19th-century historic neighbourhood north of downtown

A small National Register historic district covering the older residential streets just north of downtown Phenix City, built up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the city's textile-mill boom. The district has good examples of Folk Victorian, Queen Anne and Craftsman houses — many wood-framed with deep porches — that survived the postwar transformation of the city.

The area is residential and quiet. Walk along 18th and 19th Streets for the best concentration of period houses, or drive through. Brownville was once one of the centres of the local African-American community; several historic Black churches sit at its edges.
