Creamer's Field is a 2,000-acre migratory waterfowl refuge right in the middle of Fairbanks, occupying the site of a former dairy farm. Every spring and fall, thousands of sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and ducks stop here during their migration along the Tanana Valley flyway. In late April and early May, the fields fill with cranes — tall, elegant birds performing their hopping courtship dances.
The refuge has several miles of walking trails through boreal forest, wetlands, and open fields. In summer, you might spot moose, red foxes, and dozens of songbird species. The old farmhouse serves as a visitor center with exhibits on the refuge's ecology and history. This is one of the most accessible wildlife viewing spots in all of Alaska, and it is free. The Boreal Forest Trail loop takes about an hour and is well maintained.
