Gold Dredge 8

Historic Fairbanks gold dredge and tour site interpreting mining in the Goldstream Valley

Gold Dredge 8 is a restored industrial giant from Fairbanks' placer-mining era, set in the Goldstream Valley north of town. The dredge worked frozen Alaskan ground from the late 1920s into the 1950s, and its scale makes the engineering of gold mining feel more concrete than a pan of flakes ever could.

Visits are organised as a tour, usually with a short train ride, mining interpretation, a look at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline corridor, and a chance to pan for gold. It is unabashedly packaged for visitors, but the machinery is real and the history is central to why Fairbanks exists.
