Bars and Cafes

Juneau has a good bar scene for its size — the combination of government workers, fishermen, and year-round locals produces a mix that keeps the downtown pubs lively well beyond the tourist season. The most characterful stretch is South Franklin Street, where several bars have been operating since the gold rush era.

The Alaskan Hotel Bar at 167 South Franklin is the city's most historic drinking establishment, opened in 1913 and still going. The pressed-tin ceiling and wooden bar fixtures are original; the clientele on a good evening includes legislators, fishermen, and the occasional off-duty cruise worker. The Red Dog Saloon, a few doors up at 278 South Franklin, leans more heavily into the tourist trade but still has live music and a long list of Alaskan beers. For something quieter, Heritage Coffee at 130 Front Street is the local chain of choice, with good espresso drinks and a loyal following among the city's civil servants and lawyers. Amalga Distillery at 134 North Franklin produces Juneau-made gin and whiskey with locally foraged botanicals — the tasting room is worth a visit.
