Day Trips

Talkeetna sits between two great wild areas. Denali National Park is the obvious draw to the north, while Denali State Park -- often overlooked -- lies right along the Parks Highway between Talkeetna and the national park entrance.

Byers Lake in Denali State Park, at Mile 147 of the Parks Highway, is a rewarding half-day trip. Kayak across the lake watching for trumpeter swans, loons, and beavers, or paddle over pools of spawning salmon while keeping an eye out for bears and eagles along the shore. On a clear day the views of Denali and the Alaska Range from the water are breathtaking.

Wade-style fishing trips on the rivers south of Denali are another popular option, with guided outings targeting salmon, grayling, and trout. Most operators provide all gear including waders, boots, and fly rods.
