Summer (June to August) is the peak season. Days are very long -- Talkeetna sits above 62° north -- and the combination of daylight, open roads, and active flightseeing operators makes this the practical window for most visitors. July is the warmest month, with temperatures typically in the 60s°F (15–20°C), though rain is common throughout the summer. Denali is visible only on clear days, and clear days are never guaranteed -- in a bad week the mountain stays hidden behind cloud.
May and September are shoulder months with fewer crowds, lower prices, and a good chance of good weather. Late May through early June is particularly appealing: breakup is over, the green is fresh, and the flightseeing operators are running but the summer crush has not yet arrived.
Winter is for the committed. The Alaska Railroad runs its Aurora Winter Train on winter weekends, and the area attracts skiers and snowmobilers, but most services reduce significantly and the cold is serious. Northern lights are a draw from September through March.
The Moose Dropping Festival, an annual July event where numbered varnished moose droppings were dropped from a helicopter onto a target for prizes, drew large crowds until it was discontinued after the 2009 edition. The Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival, held each August, has taken its place as the main summer event.
