Hackberry General Store

Hackberry General Store is a Route 66 institution, 23 miles east of Kingman on the original alignment of the highway. The store is part gift shop, part diner, part living museum of the highway's golden years. Vintage vehicles rust picturesquely in the yard, old petrol pumps stand under the desert sun, and the interior is packed with memorabilia, photographs, and ephemera from the Route 66 era.

Don't blink driving through — the turnoff is easy to miss, and the store is easy to mistake for an abandoned building until you spot the other cars pulled over. It's a natural stop for anyone driving east from Kingman toward Seligman, and on a busy summer weekend the parking lot fills with motorcycles, classic cars, and campervans. The people-watching here is half the attraction.

A story
Hackberry sits at a bend in the old highway 23 miles east of Kingman. The general store here closed in 1978 and reopened in 1992 as a curated Route 66 time capsule — the owner deliberately kept the vintage gas pumps, rusting cars, and faded Coca-Cola signs rather than restoring the building to a pristine state. The result is one of the most photographed spots on the entire Mother Road.
