Getting Around

Phoenix is a sprawling city built for cars, and driving remains the easiest way to get around. The freeway network is extensive and well-marked, though rush hour can be congested. All major car rental companies have airport offices.

Valley Metro operates bus routes across the valley and runs a light rail line connecting downtown Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. The DASH bus runs weekdays from downtown to the capitol. Bus tours lasting three to four hours are a popular way to see the major sights, and several companies run longer excursions, including day trips to the Grand Canyon. Horse-drawn carriage tours of Old Town Scottsdale and 4WD desert tours round out the options.

Getting around without a car is possible but requires patience. The metro area is large and decentralized, so public transit will not cover everything.
