Phoenix

Sprawling Arizona capital in the Sonoran Desert, with Southwestern food and desert trails on every edge.

Phoenix is the capital and largest city of Arizona, sprawling across the Sonoran Desert in a vast metropolitan area known as the Valley of the Sun. The city draws winter visitors by the thousands, offering reliably warm days while the rest of the country shivers. But Phoenix is more than a snowbird refuge. It has grown into a genuine metropolis with world-class resorts, a lively food scene rooted in Mexican and Southwestern traditions, and easy access to some of the most dramatic desert landscapes in the American West.

The city rewards visitors who look beyond the strip malls and wide boulevards. Downtown Phoenix has reinvented itself with arts districts like Roosevelt Row, craft breweries, and a light rail line that connects the urban core to Tempe and Mesa. South Mountain Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, offers hiking and mountain biking with panoramic views of the entire valley. Camelback Mountain rises right out of the city's most affluent neighborhoods, providing a challenging summit hike just minutes from resort pools and golf courses.

Phoenix's diversity is one of its great strengths. The city has deep Mexican-American roots that show up everywhere, from family-run taquerias to the annual Dia de los Muertos celebrations. Old Town Scottsdale brings luxury shopping and spa culture. Tempe pulses with college-town energy around Arizona State University. Mesa has a quieter, more suburban feel. The world-class Musical Instrument Museum, the Heard Museum of Native American art, and Papago Park with its zoo and botanical garden round out a metro area that offers something for nearly every taste and budget.

Summers here are genuinely brutal, with weeks of temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. If you can handle the heat, you will find rock-bottom hotel rates and empty trails. But most visitors are wise to come between October and April, when the weather is close to perfect and the desert blooms with wildflowers.
