Whiskey Row

Whiskey Row is the block of Montezuma Street running along the western edge of Courthouse Plaza. In the town's mining and ranching heyday there were dozens of saloons along this strip; today a handful of bars still occupy the same buildings, rebuilt in brick after the 1900 fire.

The Palace Restaurant and Saloon is the most storied of the survivors — opened in the 1870s, it still has its original back bar and a frontier-Western atmosphere that manages to feel authentic rather than themed. The surrounding buildings house a mix of bars, restaurants, and shops. It gets lively on weekend evenings and during the summer tourist season.

Walking the length of the block and looking at the building details — the pressed-metal cornices, the old signage, the second-floor balconies — is a small but genuinely pleasurable activity in itself.

A story
The Palace Saloon, occupying its corner of Whiskey Row since the 1870s, claims to be the oldest continuously operating bar in Arizona. It survived the 1900 fire by being carried out onto the plaza in pieces and then carried back in once the block cooled. The original 1880s back bar — a massive carved wooden piece — is said to have made the trip both ways.
