McDowell Sonoran Preserve

The protected desert north-east of central Scottsdale runs from a few hundred metres above the city to the summit of Thompson Peak at 3,900 feet, with around 230 miles of marked trails — short loops, ridge walks, technical mountain-bike routes, and a series of trailheads each with its own personality.

The Gateway Trailhead off Bell Road is the easiest start, with a flat loop suitable for almost anyone. Pinnacle Peak, on the northern edge, has a popular three-mile out-and-back over granite boulders to a 3,170-foot summit. For serious hikers the Tom's Thumb trail climbs to a famous rock formation high on the McDowell range. Carry far more water than you think you need; the desert dehydrates faster than the city.

A story
At more than 30,000 acres, this is the largest urban preserve in the United States — bigger than four Manhattans laid edge to edge. Voters in Scottsdale taxed themselves repeatedly through the 1990s and 2000s to buy out the developers who held the land. The preserve will not be built on.
