Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

The contemporary art museum (SMoCA) occupies a converted movie theatre on the south edge of Old Town and is a small but consistently good place to spend an hour. Its standing draw is the James Turrell "Knight Rise" Skyspace, a windowless room with an aperture cut in the ceiling — sit there for fifteen minutes around dawn or dusk and the colour of the sky goes through a slow, hallucinatory shift.

The rotating exhibits lean toward Southwestern and Mexican contemporary work, with occasional bigger-name installations. The museum stays open late on Thursdays in line with the ArtWalk.
