A 125-foot spire of pre-formed concrete, gleaming pale blue and steel, rises out of a roundabout at the corner of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. Wright designed it in the 1950s as the cap for a proposed Arizona State Capitol building that was never built. It was finally constructed in 2004, almost half a century after his death, as a public monument to his Arizona legacy.
It is a strange thing to encounter from the car: too tall for its location, too thin for the desert. Park at the small lot nearby for a closer look, especially after dark when it is lit from below.
