Bell Rock

Bell Rock is the most photogenic formation in the Village of Oak Creek, the southern satellite of Sedona on Highway 179. The bell-shaped monolith rises dramatically from the flat desert floor with no foothills, making it look almost placed. The Bell Rock Trail circumnavigates the base and various social trails lead up the gentler slopes — scrambling is possible without ropes as far as the prominent ledge about halfway up.

The formation is one of Sedona's designated vortex sites and is accessible year-round. The adjacent Courthouse Butte Loop trail (about 4 miles) takes in both formations and offers some of the best red-rock views in the area with relatively modest effort. Parking at the Bell Rock trailhead on Highway 179 is the standard approach.

A story
Bell Rock is the most accessible of Sedona's major formations — you can simply walk up to it from the highway without a trail permit or shuttle. It is also the site of one of the stranger episodes in Sedona history: in 1987, a group of New Age believers gathered here to channel the opening of a "Convergence" and receive transmissions from a spaceship they believed was hidden inside the rock.
