James Turrell Skyspace: Air Apparent

Air Apparent is a James Turrell Skyspace installed on the ASU campus in 2012. It looks from outside like a low pavilion in a small grove of palo verde trees on the engineering campus. Inside, a perfectly square aperture opens to the sky. A bench runs around the walls.

It is best experienced at sunrise or sunset, when the timed LED sequence shifts the colour of the interior walls — and the patch of sky overhead reads as every colour in turn against them. The piece is free and open to the public, but the lighting sequence only runs at scheduled times around dawn and dusk. Check the schedule before going.

A story
Turrell's Skyspaces are rooms with a precisely shaped opening cut in the ceiling — frames for the sky. At sunset and sunrise, hidden coloured lights wash the interior, and the sky above changes hue against them. It looks like the sky is doing the changing.
