Barrio Bread

Website barriobread.com

Barrio Bread is a small neighbourhood bakery on the east side of Tucson that has done more than anywhere to revive local heirloom wheats. The breads — country loaves, focaccia, the Heritage Wheat baguette — are made from grains grown within a hundred miles. Buy a loaf and you taste the entire ecology of the Santa Cruz valley.

The bakery opens limited hours and frequently sells out by noon. Pre-order through the website if you want to be sure. Also stocked at the Heirloom Farmers' Market on Saturdays.

A story
Don Guerra's bakery uses White Sonora and other heritage grains that have been grown in the Santa Cruz valley for hundreds of years and were nearly lost. The 2022 James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker — his second nomination, third win in some category — recognised both the bread and the supply chain he rebuilt with local farmers.
