Atascadero is well placed as a Central Coast base. Paso Robles wine country lies 15 minutes north; San Luis Obispo, with its Spanish mission and a livelier downtown, is 20 minutes south. The coast at Morro Bay and Cayucos is about 30 minutes west — fish tacos, the volcanic rock at Morro Bay, and easy beach walks.
