Carlton Hotel

The Carlton, opened in 1929, is the historic luxury hotel on El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero. It closed for decades in the second half of the 20th century and was restored and reopened in 2004; the lobby, ballroom, and exterior detailing are essentially as built. The hotel's clock tower is, after the City Hall dome, the most recognisable thing on the downtown skyline.

You don't need to be a guest to visit. The bar and restaurant on the ground floor are open to the public and worth a drink if you're in town in the evening — a glass of Paso Robles wine in a 1920s lobby is the kind of small pleasure Atascadero quietly does well.
