Big Bear Lake

Seven-mile alpine lake at 2,060m — kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and swimming in summer

The lake itself is the reason Big Bear exists. Seven miles long and sitting at 2,060 metres between forested ridges, it is the kind of high-altitude reservoir that looks more Sierra Nevada than Southern California — clear water, pine-lined shores, and a backdrop of rocky peaks. In summer the water warms enough for swimming, and the north shore has accessible beaches.

Kayak, paddleboard, and boat rentals are available at several spots along the south shore. Fishing for trout is popular and the lake is stocked regularly. The north shore road is quieter and has better picnic spots; Boulder Bay on the north side is worth the detour. In good years, ospreys nest near the lake and are reliable viewing from mid-spring through summer.
