When to Go

Big Bear works differently in each season. Winter (December to March) is ski season — weekends are busy and hotel prices peak on Friday and Saturday nights. Midweek skiing is dramatically cheaper and the mountain is quieter. Snow is not guaranteed; Big Bear relies partly on snowmaking and in dry years conditions can be poor.

Summer (June to September) is lake season. The water is warm by July, the hiking trails are clear, and the mountain biking lifts are running. July 4th weekend is the busiest of the year — avoid unless you book months ahead.

Spring and autumn are the sleeper seasons. Spring brings wildflowers, particularly along the Castle Rock trail. October brings aspen colour in the higher reaches and noticeably thinner crowds. These months offer the best combination of good conditions and available accommodation at reasonable prices.
