Carlsbad is about 35 miles north of San Diego and 85 miles south of Los Angeles. The easiest approach from either direction is via Interstate 5, which passes right through the city.
By train, the Coaster commuter rail runs between Oceanside and San Diego with stops at Carlsbad Village and Carlsbad Poinsettia stations — a relaxed and affordable way to arrive if you are coming from San Diego. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner also stops at Oceanside, five miles to the north, with connecting bus or taxi service to Carlsbad. The nearest major airport is San Diego International (SAN), about 35 miles south; Los Angeles International (LAX) is roughly 90 miles north, making San Diego the more practical choice for most visitors.
