Avila Beach

Small Central Coast beach town with a warm bay, old piers, and a lighthouse above San Luis Bay.

Avila Beach is a small San Luis Obispo County beach town tucked into a south-facing cove about 10 miles from San Luis Obispo. It is more sheltered than many Central Coast beaches, so the air is often warmer and the water a little less brutal than at nearby Pismo or Morro Bay.

The town is compact: a short beachfront, a pier, a promenade, seafood places, and hills rising quickly behind the shore. That would not be enough on its own, but Avila also has the Point San Luis Lighthouse on the headland, the paved Bob Jones City to Sea Trail through San Luis Obispo Creek, and mineral pools at Avila Hot Springs.

Come for a slow day rather than a checklist. Walk the pier, book the lighthouse tour if it fits your schedule, ride or walk the creek trail, and leave time for the beach when the afternoon wind stays down.
