When to Go

Santa Barbara has one of the most equable climates in North America — daytime temperatures rarely fall below 15°C in winter or rise above 25°C in summer. Year-round travel is realistic.

May and June can bring "May Gray" and "June Gloom" — low marine cloud that doesn't burn off until early afternoon, especially at the beach. July to September is reliably clear and warm; weekends in August are the busiest period and accommodation is most expensive.

Autumn (September–November) is the best window for most travellers: warm clear days, ocean temperature still swimmable, no fog, and lighter crowds. Winter is mild and quieter; January and February occasionally bring serious storms — recent fires and the 2018 Montecito mudslide are reminders of how rough the wet season can get.

Events worth timing for: the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (early February), Old Spanish Days Fiesta (early August), and the Summer Solstice Parade (June).
