When to Go

Spring (April–June) is whitewater season: the snowmelt fills the Kern River and the commercial rafting operations are in full swing. This is the busiest time of year and the only time most outfitters open.

Summer is hot and dry — temperatures often hit 38°C in the valley but stay cooler at altitude. Lake Isabella draws weekenders, and the higher trails in the Sequoia forest are accessible.

Autumn is the most pleasant season: warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and the Western Divide turns gold and red. Winter is quiet, with cold but rarely snowy weather in town; the higher passes close for snow and chains may be required on Highway 155 over to the western side.
