El Viejo Post Office

A 1933 New Deal post office in downtown Modesto, built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style that swept California public buildings of the period. Sandstone-coloured stucco, terracotta tiled roof, arched doorways, and a small fountain courtyard at the entry.

The interior still has the original brass mailboxes, marble counters, and a WPA-era mural by Ray Boynton depicting agricultural life in the valley. The building is now mainly used for retail postal services but you can step inside on weekdays to see the lobby. It is two short blocks from the Modesto Arch.
