Modesto is not a major tourist destination, but it rewards a few hours of exploration. The two McHenry institutions — the Mansion and the Museum — sit near each other in the older part of town and together tell a convincing story of how this valley was settled and farmed. The Great Valley Museum offers a different perspective, covering the natural history that underlies all that agriculture. Add the Modesto Arch, the State Theatre, and a stroll around Graceada Park and you have a satisfying half-day.
