The main museum of Stockton, housed in a 1931 building in Victory Park, with two distinct collections: an art gallery strong in nineteenth-century French academic painting and California landscapes, and a local history museum covering the development of the Central Valley from Native Californian culture through the gold rush and the agricultural industrialisation of the twentieth century.
The art collection is the surprise — French painters like Bouguereau and Rosa Bonheur, alongside American painters like Albert Bierstadt who documented the California landscape in the 1860s and 1870s. The history galleries are less polished but cover territory — the delta communities, the canneries, the Japanese American presence before and after the internment — that gets little attention in larger California museums. Admission is charged; free on Sundays. Open Wednesday through Sunday.
