Mount San Jacinto State Park

Alpine wilderness reachable from desert in fifteen minutes by tramway

Accessed via the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the Mount San Jacinto State Wilderness offers an abrupt and startling transition from desert to alpine terrain. The Mountain Station at 8,516 feet sits at the edge of a pine forest; from there, trails spread out into Long Valley and up toward the 10,834-foot summit. The round trip to the summit is a serious undertaking — about 11 miles and 2,300 feet of climbing from the Mountain Station — but the views from the top stretch across the Coachella Valley, the Salton Sea, and on clear days to the Pacific.

In winter, snowshoe rentals are available at the Mountain Station, and the short nature walk around Long Valley becomes a snow trail. The temperature difference between the valley floor and the station can exceed 40°F on a summer day, making the park a genuine refuge from desert heat. The park boundary begins immediately outside the tram's Mountain Station, so no car is needed.
