Nevada Theatre

California's oldest theater, where Mark Twain once performed

Address 401 Broad St, Nevada City, CA

California's oldest continuously operating theater building, open since 1865. The rustic Victorian building on Broad Street seats 240 on the main floor plus balcony, and runs a mix of live performances, films, and community events year-round. Even if you don't catch a show, the exterior is worth a look — it's one of the anchor buildings of the historic downtown.

A story
Mark Twain performed here in 1866, just one year after the theater opened. Jack London also appeared on the stage. When it closed in 1957, community donations brought it back to life — it reopened in 1968 and has been running ever since.
