California Automobile Museum

Over 150 antique, classic, and collector cars displayed in a dedicated museum near William Land Park. The collection covers American automotive history from the early 1900s through the muscle car era, with particular depth in California-relevant models — the cars that actually drove these Central Valley roads. Several vehicles have genuine local provenance.

The museum is less famous than it deserves to be, partly because Sacramento's car culture tends to get credited to Los Angeles. But the Sacramento region has a strong automotive tradition, and this museum documents it carefully. The weekend swap meets in the parking lot are a draw for collectors.

A story
The museum's collection includes a 1908 Ford Model T that belonged to the family of a Sacramento blacksmith, complete with its original hand-painted pin-striping — an early customisation job in a tradition that would eventually give the world the custom car culture of 1950s Sacramento, centred on Fulton Avenue and immortalised in George Lucas's American Graffiti.
