Effie Yeaw Nature Center

A nature centre and wildlife preserve in the American River Parkway near Carmichael, about 15 kilometres east of downtown Sacramento. The centre sits within a 77-acre oak woodland alongside the American River, with trails that offer some of the best wildlife viewing near Sacramento — deer, wild turkeys, and river otters are regularly visible from the paths, and the birding along the river is excellent year-round.

The centre runs educational programmes and has good interpretive exhibits on the natural history of the Sacramento Valley, including the Central Valley's role as one of North America's most important waterbird flyways. The grounds are open daily and the walk along the river trail is worthwhile even without stopping at the centre building.

A story
Deer, wild turkeys, and river otters are all resident in the preserve around the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. The mule deer population here has grown so accustomed to human presence that individuals wander through the picnic areas with complete indifference to visitors. Birding is exceptional in winter when migrating waterfowl join the resident great blue herons and belted kingfishers on the American River.
