Esther's Mexican Kitchen

A long-running Mexican restaurant in the Midtown neighbourhood, serving Oaxacan-influenced food with a strong vegetarian presence. Sacramento has a large and growing Mexican and Mexican-American population, and the best Mexican restaurants here are considerably more sophisticated than the Tex-Mex norm. Esther's mole negro — dark, complex, made with at least 20 ingredients — is worth a special trip.

The room is small and the wait times can be long on weekends, but the food rewards patience. The breakfast menu, served until early afternoon, is particularly popular. The tamales and the posole are both outstanding.
