Pillar Point Harbor

Working fishing harbour at the north end of town, with fresh dungeness crab off the boats in season

The small harbour at the northern end of town is a genuine working fishing port, not a marina. The Dungeness crab season runs from mid-November through June, and during the early weeks you can buy live crabs straight off the boats at the inner dock — bring a cooler. The harbour is also where commercial salmon, halibut, and rockfish boats unload, and where the Mavericks surf contest fleet launches when the swell hits.

The breakwater walk is a short, flat loop with views out to the famous surf break and back across the harbour to the town. There is a cluster of casual seafood places on the harbour itself — Sam's Chowder House (the obvious one, with a huge deck) is the tourist anchor, but Barbara's Fishtrap, perched on the pier, is older, smaller, and arguably better for fish and chips. On weekends a small farmer's market runs at the harbour parking lot.
