Hot Creek Geological Site

Hot Creek is a spring-fed stream about ten miles east of Mammoth Lakes that flows through a stark volcanic landscape of white fumaroles and steaming pools. The geological site is part of the Long Valley Caldera, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the United States, and the geothermal activity here is visible and dramatic: boiling water bubbles up through the creek bed, creating temperature gradients that can shift within feet.

The geological site has a short interpretive trail along the canyon rim with good views down into the gorge. Hot Creek itself remains a celebrated fly-fishing stream above the thermal area — the spring water keeps temperatures stable year-round, making for productive trout fishing even in winter. The access road from US-395 is well-signed and paved; the site is managed by the US Forest Service and has a small parking area and basic facilities.

A story
Hot Creek is fed partly by geothermal springs that heat the water to scalding temperatures in places — swimming is now banned after several fatal accidents when vents shifted unpredictably, but watching the steam rise from the clear cold creek is still worth the drive.
