Julian is about 60 miles northeast of San Diego, a drive of roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. The most scenic route is Highway 78 from Ramona or State Route 79 from the south through Cuyamaca. There is no public transport to Julian — a car is essential.
The mountain roads leading to Julian are narrow and winding in places. In winter after snowfall, chains or four-wheel drive may be required; check the Caltrans road conditions before heading up.
