Sunset Strip

The Sunset Strip is the 1.6-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard running through West Hollywood between Crescent Heights to the east and Doheny Drive to the west. It was unincorporated Los Angeles County from the 1920s onwards — meaning no LAPD jurisdiction — which allowed the clubs, gambling houses, and speakeasies that defined it to operate outside city law. By the early 1960s it had become the centre of the American music industry.

The big venues — Whisky a Go Go, the Roxy, the Viper Room — are still here and still active. The billboards above them, updated every few weeks, are the most expensive outdoor advertising in the world: a cultural indicator of who's promoting what to whom. Walking the Strip from Crescent Heights to Doheny takes about twenty-five minutes and passes almost everything worth seeing.
