The Abbey

The Abbey at 692 N Robertson Boulevard started in 1991 as a small coffee shop and grew into what many consider the most famous gay bar in the United States. It now occupies a large indoor-outdoor complex — a series of rooms and terraces that spill into a wide courtyard — open from late morning through 2am every day of the week.

The crowd is mixed: gay men, lesbians, straight women, tourists, locals. Drag shows and themed nights run throughout the week. It's louder and more crowded on weekends, but worth visiting whenever you arrive. The cocktail menu is long and the food is surprisingly decent for a bar this size.
