SRI International

SRI International is a nonprofit research institute occupying a campus in Menlo Park that has been at the centre of computing history. Originally the Stanford Research Institute, it was spun off from Stanford University in 1970 and has since been an independent organisation conducting contract research for government, industry, and foundations. Its alumni include Siri, which was developed at SRI before being acquired by Apple.

The campus is not generally open to casual visitors, but SRI's contribution to the technology now underlying everyday life makes it worth understanding as a site of historical significance. The Computer History Museum in nearby Mountain View has extensive coverage of the SRI work and is the best place to understand the context of what was developed here. SRI itself has an online museum documenting its research history.

A story
SRI International was where Douglas Engelbart's team invented the computer mouse in 1964 and demonstrated it publicly in 1968 in what became known as "The Mother of All Demos" — a single 90-minute presentation that also showed hypertext linking, video conferencing, and collaborative real-time document editing. The demo took place in San Francisco, but all of it was built at Menlo Park. SRI was also where the first ARPANET message was transmitted in 1969.
