Morgan Hill

South Santa Clara County city with vineyards and open foothills at Silicon Valley's rural edge.

Morgan Hill is a small city of around 45,000 people at the southern end of Santa Clara County, about 25 miles south of San Jose in the Coyote Valley. It sits between the Diablo Range to the east and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west — rolling hills, open grassland, and a genuinely agricultural feel that sets it apart from the denser Silicon Valley cities to the north.

The town has a walkable downtown along Monterey Road with local restaurants, a farmers market, and a handful of wineries and tasting rooms. The surrounding hills offer solid hiking and mountain biking, particularly in Uvas Canyon County Park and the Henry W. Coe State Park to the east — one of the largest state parks in California and worth the detour if you have a day to spare.

Morgan Hill is primarily a base rather than a destination in its own right. It's convenient for travellers heading between San Jose and the Monterey Peninsula or Santa Cruz, and makes a quieter, cheaper overnight stop than the cities to the north.
